The brilliant American organist Dr Baird returns to the festival to play Duruflé, the Schübler Chorales of J.S.Bach and the Barber Adagio on the newly restored grand Fincham organ.

Inspired by the annual Venetian ceremony to ‘marry’ Venice to the Sea at the entrance to the lagoon, we will celebrate the marriage of Ballarat to LakeWendouree

Accompanied by Newman College Choir and the colourful renaissance ensemble La Compañia with sackbuts and cornets, the Bishop, Doge and other dignitaries will sail across the Lake in the paddle steamer to conduct the ceremony.  To add to the occasion, spectacular kites created by artists from the Venice Biennale will be flown.

Vespers for the Venetian Marriage to the Sea

This evening’s recital features a reconstruction of the festive Vespers music for choir and period brass instruments, which was always performed after the Venetian Marriage to the Sea ceremony, Sposalizio del Mare.  The performance includes music for a spectacular eight-part choir and period brass instruments by Giovanni Gabrieli, Claudio Monteverdi and Antonio Lotti.

Dr Calvin Bowman plays works which first captivated him or have been important to him. The program also includes some of his own compositions including the premier performance of a work for organ and soprano commissioned by The Hugh Williamson Foundation and Ballarat Grammar in 2011.

Mozart Church Sonatas Bach G major concerto
Dr Barbara Baird makes a welcome return to the festival from Oregon USA. We will hear the beautiful old mechanical action organ, brought from England in about 1866 and recently restored by the South Island Organ Company, NZ.

This recital will be dedicated to the members of the company who lost their lives in the disasterous 2011 Christchurch earthquake whilst removing the previously  earthquake damaged organ from the Durham Street Methodist Church.
